Its not that they can’t make money offering free. They can, have and will. The problem is that they know that its literally impossible to be the king of the mountain forever. But that won’t stop them from trying. And that is exactly what will kill them.

Their better choice would be to run the company as profitably as possible, focusing only on those things that generate revenue and put cash in the bank. More importantly, when you see your BlackSwan company appear and you know they will kick your ass, rather than ramping up to try to compete, get out. Sell. Or maximize cash and pay your shareholders every penny you have.

Like every company in the free space, your lifecycle has come to its conclusion. Don’t fight it. Admit it. Profit from it.

Twitter followers are worth money to you and your business. The more followers you have, the more money you will inevitably make marketing your products and services to them. With our own accounts we find that each follower we have is worth about $0.10 to us every month. Therefore, for every 1,000 followers, you’ll should earn around $100 from them per month. Have 10,000? That’s a further $1,000 per month for you or your company.

For an investment of only $87, we’ll bring you 1,000 brand new Twitter followers to your existing account, or we’ll set up a new account for yourself or your business at no charge in order to deliver the followers. Order now — only $87!

Haptic Tactile Feedback
Apple proposes including a grid of piezoelectronic actuators that can be activated on command. By fluctuating the frequency of these actuators, the user will “feel” different surfaces as their finger moves across it. As an example, a display could include a virtual click wheel which vibrates at a different frequency as the center. Users could easily sense the difference and use the click wheel without having to look at it.

Fingerprint Identification as an Input Method
A second very intriguing patent application suggests the detection of a user’s individual fingerprints as an input method. Fingerprints have already been used in computers for security purposes, but Apple’s research involves the use of fingerprint patterns to actually identify distinct fingers. This could then be used to produce specific functions depending on which finger is being used.

RFID Reader
Apple suggests that the an RFID antenna can be placed in the touch sensor panel itself, allowing it to also be used as a RFID reader. As RFID tags become more prevalent, this could add a very useful function to future touch screen devices.

“how will this new business model support the world as we know it today?”

Who cares if it does? It is. It’s happening. The world will change around it, because the world has no choice. I’m sorry if that’s inconvenient, but it’s true. (…)

People will pay for content if it is so unique they can’t get it anywhere else, so fast they benefit from getting it before anyone else, or so related to their tribe that paying for it brings them closer to other people. (…)

People will not pay for yesterday’s news, driven to our house, delivered a day late, static, without connection or comments or relevance. Why should we? (…)

The reason that we needed paid contributors before was that there was only economic room for a few magazines, a few TV channels, a few pottery stores, a few of everything. In world where there is room for anyone to present their work, anyone will present their work. Editors become ever more powerful and valued, while the need for attention grows so acute that free may even be considered expensive.
